The name
given by the ancient settlers of the town was “ Pudica Fons”, for being a
source hidden by brambles and weeds of the place. Its history goes back to the
early Middle Ages, and has left us an extensive cultural heritage, which has
merited and has won the "C" of Tourism in 2002.
Ampudia
conserved among its colonnaded streets some monuments that are worth mentioning
as the Collegiate Church of San Miguel together with the Castle is one of the
most emblematic buildings in the locality. Gothic- renaissance style, its
construction began in the twelfth century, culminating in the sixteenth
century. Its tower, designed by Juan de Escalante, reaches 63 meters high.
Inside the temple, along with the various altarpieces, you can see a large
sample of imagery and relief, and an impressive Baroque organ located in the
choir of the seventeenth century.
The Museum
of Sacred Art is in the church of the former Convent of San Francisco, founded
in the seventeenth century by the Duke of Lerma. Its rich heritage, lets see
works dating from the twelfth to the eighteenth century, and are a clear
example of everything that had or has to do with the Catholic Church and its
impact on Ampudia.
Ampudia's
streets are a sample of typical Castilian architecture. Their houses, two
heights are mostly of adobe and brick, and resting on rustic wooden logs or
stone columns forming a portico structure that still stands from the since the
seventeenth century, with some poles of the thirteenth century.
Ampudia’s
Castle is an Historic monument since 1931. Fontaneda family property.
The castle
in its present form corresponds to a stately Gothic fortress. This is a
building with tropezoidal that had four square towers at the corners most of
which corresponds to the so-called Tower of Homage.
In 1960 it
was acquired by D. Enrique Perez Fontaneda, which conducted a restoration
process, and also the fruit of their labor collector, the castle houses a
magnificent collection of art objects and antiques, which the visitor can
admire the different rooms: Rooms Archaeology, Sacred Art Facilities , Rooms of
toys, The pharmacy, Boards of weapons and musical aspects, Chamber of
Ethnography and Folk Art.
